HISTORY
Members of the Thunderbird Sailing Club saw the need for a facility at Lake Thunderbird for lake-related educational and safety programs. The club entered into a contract with the State of Oklahoma to build and operate a community center for this purpose. To raise the funds for this project, the club created the Lake Thunderbird Education Foundation (LTEF), a 501(c)(3) corporation that could provide tax exemption for donations.
The LTEF has raised more than $250,000 to date. These monies have built the 2,500 square feet Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse with an adjacent boatyard, ramp and dock. The BoatHouse was completed April 2002. In addition to Thunderbird Sailing Club,, Oklahoma Sailing Club, TRI-OKC, Edmond Elks Lodge, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation, Tinker Air Force Chiefs, Oklahoma Park Rangers and others have partnered to provide a combination of educational and safety programs.
